Online Poker with Friends | Part 23

I’ll start with the good news. As I write this (after this session and a few other online sessions), my cash games for the year…

Win/Loss: 53-43

Overall: +$5,663.89

This isn’t amazing, but it’s profitable, which puts me ahead of 90% of poker players. This also brings me to a related point. If most poker players are all studying the same thing, following the same plan, and 90% of them are losing, what does that tell you?

I have a short-term problem right now. I recently suffered the worst week online for the year. I’m taking a few days off for a mental reset. That’s not the problem, though. And the problem might not even be a problem—it could be a good thing.

This ‘problem’ is that I have looked soft and passive as shit the past week. This is part of my game. I want my opponents—especially new opponents—to view me that way. And there are many new players in the game the past few weeks. I always think long-term. I don’t think session-by-session (excluding records), and I certainly don’t think hand by hand. My game plan is always the same: appear soft and passive for hours, maybe even days. Set the long-term trap. This usually leads to me being attacked aggressively when I have a hand. My opponents think they can move me off the hand, but they’re usually wrong. I won’t hesitate to call with A-high if I feel I’m right. If I have a nutty hand, even better. This is usually a big pot.

Once I win that pot and have chips, I become a much different player. Then I begin to attack. Then slow down. Then attack, then trap, then slow down. I might raise with 63s and I might limp with AK. It all depends on my opponents. So, in essence, I need that one big pot (usually after a few hours) to get moving. I had several opportunities for this over the past week, but this is what happened.

I called an all-in vs an AGGRO player for $113 when I had 44. I know that sounds crazy, but I knew I was ahead. He tabled K3.

Flop: 46T (good flop)

Turn: 5

River: 7

So … that happened.

On the very next night, I had KK vs the same player. Here’s the short version, he chased a gut-shot + one over and hit the gut-shot. Took my stack.

The night after that, I got it all-in with a Q-high flush, thinking I was good, but I lost to a straight-flush (different opponent).

And against that opponent, I slow-played AQ on Q5Q flop and 5 turn before getting it all-in on river. That river happened to be a T, and he had TT.

This is obviously the danger in being a trappy player, and most people will say: “That’s why you can’t do that!”

They are wrong. How many times do I need to prove this? I don’t understand how some people don’t understand. By playing this style, you have two huge advantages. One, your opponents will rarely trust your checks, which will slow them down. Two, without them realizing it, you are controlling the pot. By controlling the pot, you are reducing variance. You will know when to build the pot.

Here’s my point. I will look soft and passive to some people some of the time. But I don’t care because my goal is profit, which is difficult to achieve in this game. I should also note that live games are different. If I see a passive game, I’m going to steamroll from the beginning. If I’m in an Ego game, I’m going to wait.

I’d like to state something else that might be of value to readers. Someone messaged me yesterday and asked the difference between poker now and poker in 2013.

I said, “For me, not much.”

He explained that people would just call with KQ on the BTN back then and will 3-bet now.

My explanation (how I think): “For me, it depends on the player that raised.”

I understand that the technical side of the game has changed, but for me, it has always been about the people, their patterns, and their current mood (patience, cleverness, tilt).

In life, I go with the flow. I know with 99% certainty (if that’s possible) that I’m losing online for a reason. It hasn’t fazed me much because my overall total is up over the past three weeks. I go with the flow, as in where the universe leads me. Never force anything. When you force things, it leads to bad results.

By losing over the past week, it has led to me being motivated in other areas. This is how I operate. Whenever I lose in poker, I transfer that energy to be productive elsewhere. Actually, these losses led to me making a time-sensitive business move. If I had continued winning, there is zero chance I would have made this move. This move could end up being anything from a complete dud to a huge home run. I wouldn’t be surprised by either, and whichever one it is, that is the path. Never force anything. Trust the universe.

Now let’s get to some poker (and some interesting conversation). Please keep in mind that the results of this night are already included in the results above.
